I'm pretty new around here. How can I get the info on the GB? And how can I join in the buy?

From post 2718 in this thread:

1. To be included in this group buy, go to: http://www.n344rb.com/MUSICIANSWORKSHOP and fill out the form to register for the group buy. Upon successful registration you will receive an email receipt of your registration.

2. After successfully registering, return to the same page/link: http://www.n344rb.com/MUSICIANSWORKSHOP and click on the button on that page that is labeled: "User Console". This will take you to a login page for a User Console that will allow you to manage your products of the group buy.

3. On your first visit to the User Console, you will use your email address that you registered for the group buy with, and your password will be "password", without the quotes of course. Upon logging in, you will be able to change your password, which I highly recommend doing. CAPTCHA is case sensitive. For anyone that doesn't know, CAPTCHA means: "Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart". It makes sure that the login is being performed by a human and not a machine....

Thanks Pohaku,
When will we find out the prices? And should I pick out some things I'd like before the prices are posted and then change it later?

I tried signing up on the form but it won't allow my email address to be fully entered. It's 35 characters in total.

Thanks
Gareth

Sorry about that.. I've modified it to allow 50 characters, which is the max I have set on the database... If you need more, let me know and I'll modify the database to allow more characters as well.

Thanks in advance,

Randy

I know others have posted this, But I know I will want to order a few mics in addition to the 4 pres I allready have on order. I am just waiting on the prices on the mics to figure how many I can afford.
I can't remember the prices (ballpark) on the different models.

I've tried to amend my order and those magnifying glasses next to the products don't work. Which peamp is which?

Those "magnifying glasses" next to each product only show product detail. You have to amend your order by going to: http://www.n344rb.com/MUSICIANSWORKSHOP/ the same place you registered, and click the "User Console" button. On your first login, you will use the email address that you registered with and your password will be "password", which you can change after you login.

One of the causes of the "magnifying glasses" not working for you could be a pop-up blocker... When you click these "magnifying glasses", a pop-up will come up to show the product detail. If you have a pop-up blocker running, allow pop-ups on the registration page.

As far as product detail on the preamps, a good page is Chance's web site at: Chance's Web Site

Thanks,

Randy

Just got the latest email re the GB and decided I'll grab another pre to bump up the numbers.

Can someone suggest which one I should get? I originally ordered the 84 but not sure if I should grab another of those or get either a 73 or 81......

I personally am going with 2 81's(lots of eq options) and 2 73's (enough eq, but also A DI). If I was you, I would go for the 73 because of the DI.

Just got the email!:D Will register and decide on some mics soon!

A question that has not been answered though is how the mics SOUND?!!!:(

I don't really want to purchase 2 x 6802's AND 2 x 1200's if they sound very similar, or if one of them doesnt fit my needs - I'd rather spend the money on other offerings or some more pre's!

Also the ACM1 and ACM4 were not included in the prices. Does this mean they are not on offer anymore?

For anyone who bought mics from the previous buy (or for that matter, anyone witha bit of experience:D!) currently, my mic locker contains:

T.Bone Retro JR (cheap lollypop LD condenser)
Oktava MK 319
2 x Naiant MSH1
2 x Naiant MSH2
1 x Naiant MSH4
5 x Naiant MSH1k
1 x SM57
1 x T.bone BD300 (cheap kick mic)

From the GB I *definately* want two ACM3's. I also want a pair of the valve condensers, either the 6802 or the 1200.

I think I'll mainly end up recording general "guitar" bands, but I also seem to be doing a lot of jazz based stuff with horns in, so was wondering if anyone could share any advice on what might be appropriate for me.

I was thinking the ACM1 since I believe ribbons used to be common for horn sections back in the 30's - 50's (I may be wrong here:o:p) but I've also read that the ACM1 is very dark? While the 900 looks very appealing, I'm not sure if I can afford two of them, and I'm not sure I'd want another "tube" mic, as the 6802 and 1200's would cover that base. Any ideas on what would be a good pair to choose for using on horns (and which horns would they be best on too!)

Sorry if thats a bit rambly!
Long day:p
Gareth

The 200, 300, and 900 are all ribbons with the 900 being a "tube ribbon" I have been using them a lot over the past 2 weeks. I am dying to try the 900 on horns as it is very smooth

Whats it like compared to the tube condensers you offer?

Infact, could you give me a general description of how the three compare to eachother (6802, 1200 and 900).

The advantage of the tube ribbon for me is that (at least I assume) it won't blow up if you run phantom power down the channel?

I'd like to do a bit of location recording of gigs but I'd be a bit concerned if I was sharing the desk with FOH and he switches the phantom on and blows all my ribbons!

Very excited about getting some new mics and pres!
Good work!
Gareth

I have been trying to enter my order but once I log in I cannot get to the screen to enter the item quantities.

What is the procedure to actually be able to order the items?

Phantom power will not damage any of these ribbons UNLESS you have a miswired mic cable going to them. As for comparison, they're just a different color on your palete. For me with the new ribbons, I am using them on EVERYTHING to learn what they are best suited for in my studio.
I still havent found anything that beats the ACM-2 for guitar cabs. The only REAL comparison that would/will make up your mind, would be YOUR "hands on" experience with any mic you try/use. A few years ago I went and spent around $4000.00 for an AKG C-12/vr, and it was the biggest waste of money I ever spent. I sold it at a loss less than a month after I got it. My advice for ANY mic you might purchase in the future is to "buy it, try it, keep it if you like it, and sell it if you don't". After doing this over time, the mics you collect in your locker will be mics that you KNOW and love.

I'm such a dick!
I ordered a 73 NOT an 84......:o

EDIT: so I guess the question is do I get another 73 or an alternate?

Chance,

would you be able to give a quick, subjective run-down of your take on the powered ribbons (200, 300, 900) and how they differ from the standard ribbon models or from each other in terms of sound?

Good call. If you could do this for all the mics that would be great.

Your insight (re: the AKG C12) is definately good advice. I understand that mics are a very subjective thing and favour some sources over others, and of course its just a case of having a go.

However, I think what most people are getting at is that they don't want to buy too many of the same type of mic if they can get a broader palette.

I've read the 583 is a very bright mic, and conversely the ACM1 is a dark mic - that at least gives an idea of where they fall compared with eachother and my current mics. For example, I'm not sure if I'd want an overly dark LDC as I have an Oktava 319, which fits that description - I'd probably give the 583 a go for some contrasting options.

Likewise, I don't want to purchase all your "dark mics" when i could have picked a mixture of "colours".

Sorry for nagging, but its just nice to have some sort of subjective overview of a product before buying.

Either way - I'll be buying as many as I can afford:D

Well one thing I have noticed using the tube ribbon in the project I am now working on. The girl singer has very good chops BUT her voice is shrill and thin. The tube ribbon will now be my go-to mic for these types of applications.

This is the first time this system is being used, so I'm sure there will be bugs that raise their heads from time to time. Please post any problems that you have here, and Chance or I will work to resolve them.

Thanks in advance,
