so in the almost 1 year of having my drum set, i went from my initial cymbal lineup:
  • 14" Zildjian A Custom Mastersound bottom/ A Mastersound Top hi hats
  • 16" Zildjian Amir Crash
  • 17" Zildjian A Thin Crash
  • 20" Zildjian Amir Ride

to today's latest and greatest lineup:
  • 10" Paiste 802 Splash
  • 14" Zildjian A Custom Mastersound bottom/ A Mastersound Top hi hats
  • 17" Zildjian A Thin Crash
  • 18" Sabian AAX Dark Crash
  • 20" Sabian AAXplosion Crash *new today!
  • 22" Paiste 2002 Ride *new (used) yesterday!

downside is that now i can't spend any more money on myself for the rest of the year. but i don't care :D:cool:

Very, very nice dude. You like those AAX cymbals? I've found them to be very "dark", but I'm clueless. I've been looking at new cymbals too. I have no idea what I want yet, but I do know that I want your ride cymbal.

Congrats bro. Nice setup.

Too bad about those toms though. :p

Sweet rig Zed...not as cool as my cheap ass setup, but you're getting there....:D

yeah i like em. and they are very dark. in fact...weird thing is that 18" Dark almost sounds BIGGER than the 20 haha. but they still cut really good, and have some nice shimmer to em. but they have a big sound and a lower pitch with nice sustain. i dunno, i've always liked that BIG wide-open cymbal sound. they're loud without being offensive.

I used a 19" (I think it was 19) AAX dark one time live, and man I had to bash the shit out of that thing for it to cut through. It was just a big, slow "Bawoosh" sound. It sounded nice by itself and just dinking around the kit during the sound check, but it didn't at all fit our faster paced stuff once the bass and guitars got roaring. It was like I'd hit it, and half a beat later you'd hear it and it sounded all goofy. I think for slower, heavy stuff though it would be pretty good. Personal tastes.

I'm personally looking for something with a quick cut-through "attack", medium not-too-bright tone, and a smooth decay. I want a big ride with a deep bell sound too. I have no idea what to buy.

maybe check out some of the bigger A Customs. like a 19" A Custom Projection Crash would probably do it, or maybe a 18. the thing about A Customs is the bigger ones still don't sound too big, which is good in your case because they will open up a lot faster. they are fairly bright, but not bright to the point where it hurts. i really liked the sound of the A Customs, but just didn't fit the "theme" that i wanted. i'm going for a more ambient, "spacey" cymbal sound i guess you could say.

also maybe a AAX Stage Crash could do the trick, or even a smaller AAXplosion crash like 16 or 17" for speed. so many possibilities! maybe i'll go cymbal shopping again and give you some fresher opinions on quicker crashes. ;)

WOW!! Those would make even MY girly ching ching ching sound MANLY....:D

Congrats Zed.

Yes, please do. I need opinions. My ears aren't good enough for cymbal comparisons.

That also sounds to me like A Customs, I've used them for years. The are great for just about every type of music. If you want a fast attack, try an A custom fast crash, I really like them. Maybe try a K ride too. I'm just starting to switch over from A customs to Istanbul Alchemy cymbals. First thing I got was a 13" rock hi hat, and they are the most amazing cymbals I've ever played, and I've gone through Paiste, Sabian, Mienl, and Zildjian. That doesn't help you at all, but i just had to brag about my new cymbals :D

the K rides are nice...i would check out some of the higher end Sabian rides with the raw bell...they have some really bad-ass ones and they look cool too. i'm not really a huge fan of ZIldjian rides, but i love zildjian hi hats. paiste and sabian are nice rides.

greg picks on our girly toms because he's insecure about his girly penis. :D:eek:

nice cymbals, by the way. :)

Lol. Girly penis doesn't even make sense. :p

By the way, you only have a few girly toms. They're canceled out by the 16 and 18 inchers. :D

damn i finally got to really lay into that 20" crash today (brought it home late last night), and DAMN it's awesome! i love it when you slam the hell out of a crash and you can actually feel a breeze coming off of it. now that's a man's cymbal! hahaha :D

and in other news, my new room is under construction as we speak, maybe done in another week or so. so i will have sound clips.

Played my guitarists Zildjian cymbals tonight at our bands practice. He likes Zildjians exclusively for reasons I don't understand. He doesn't even play his drums...ever. He barely even knows how to play. They're just set up in his apartment and he dusts them every day. Anyway, these cymbals were up against a Randall 200W halfstack, Marshall JCM800/1960a 100W halfstack, and a Backline600 bass rig.

Here's my non-expert review of his cymbals when really played by a hack (me):

Zildjian A custom 17" medium crash - piece of shit. Sounded weak and refused to cut through the guitars no matter how hard I bashed it. If I'd go from slightly open hats to this cymbal, you couldn't even hear it. Useless for my kind of music.

Zildjian Z custom 18" medium crash - I liked this one. It cut through nicely without having to bash it and it didn't sustain all day long, but just enough. Didn't feel like I was gonna break it compared to the A custom. It was a little shrill, but not too bad. I'd probably buy this cymbal to supplement a few that sound a little better.

Zildjian A custom 21" Ride - Nice, but nothing special. Bell sounded okay. I had to play it pretty hard to really get the ping to shine though the guitars. I'd like to have a deeper bell sound. Smooth woosh sound when played on the edge. I'd maybe buy this cymbal.

Zildjian A 10" fast-splash - Yawn.

All in all, I don't think I'd buy any of these to start out with.

yeah with the A Customs, you're really gonna have to go BIG to get away from the weak sounding ones. try at least an 18-20" A Custom Projection crash, thats my suggestion. that one should cut through and be easier on the ears than the Z Custom, and quicker than most other cymbals that size. other than that, maybe a 17-19" AAX Stage Crash or AAXplosion. the AAX Dark might be a little too "slow" for your style. a 18" AAXplosion might be right up your alley though.

as for a ride, maybe check out the Sabian Hand Hammered Leopard ride, or the Raw Bell Dry ride. i love those ones. or maybe check out a Paiste 2002 ride!

Yeah I'm gonna look into those AAX cymbals. I see them everywhere. I'm not particular to any brand, although I'd like to try some Paiste's - because Marky Ramone uses them. :D

one Piaste to look out for is the 20" Giant Beat. i tried that thing out at the store yesterday and it was AWESOME. useable as both a crash and a ride, just has a cool sound to it. not extremely Crashy sounding, nor Ridey sounding, just something kinda in the middle i guess. wouldn't use it as a main crash, but it has a really cool character to it. i woulda got it, but i really wanted something more Crashey and less Ridey, ;)
