I was thinking about taking vocal lessons, and was just wondering to myself....

How many professional rock (and when I say rock I don't mean only hard rock, I mean everything from James Taylor to Mettalica....) vocalists do you think took vocal lessons?

Britain these days is, sadly, the land of the "manufactured" pop band, and the recording studios employ singing teachers.
If they didn't the stuff that's churned out would be even more dire than it is. Also many pop/rock singers diversify into musicals, for example, and they need to train for these. Madonna had intensive vocal coaching for her part in Evita.

A substantial minority of untrained singers actually abuse their voices (screaming and straining for example) and damage their vocal chords. It's worth taking the time to learn the basics of correct singing technique.

Not every vocal coach specialises exclusively in Classical music. The best teacher I ever had was an expert in Broadway, but we worked on a bit of jazz, and some pop as well. There are important elements common to all styles of singing, such as good breath control and support, and an awareness of vocal health.

Tell your teacher from the outset what you hope to achieve by taking lessons, and perhaps have a couple of trial sessions before commiting yourself long-term. Singing lessons are a great morale booster: I hope you find a good coach. Enjoy yourself!

i think it would be fun to try out voice lessons. I was just watching the osbournes last night and ozzy was doing exercises with a teacher on the piano so i think he takes them. I think they would help.

Yeah, I think they would help too. I don't aspire to be Pavarotti or anything, but I would like to have a voice I could be proud of.

Go for it Pen.
No amount of knowledge will hurt you. You can only gain by it. Even if you learn one thing and utilize it, you're richer for the lessons.

Hope you do it, and good luck.

i've read that rob thomas (matchbox 20) and tom petty have had them......also, on bon jovi's behind the music, it said that jon survived some tour only with the help of a vocal coach.........i can all but guarantee that any band you read about that cancels tour dates because of strained vocals will soon have a vocal coach after that

it is simple

you said it right. no amount of knowlege will hurt you. unless ignorance is bliss. In this case it is a blown voice or having to cancel the biggest gig of your life because you practiced too much. I promise that there are no professional singers that didn't have a little help from someone somewhere. Read up on the basics first. It will give you an overview so you don't waiste all you Dough on learning something you could learn at home. and vocal improvement only happens when you practice.

i've been singing as long as i can remember and i have had vocal teachers when i was young. i did learn some from them breathing tecniques and so forth but i did run into some problems with them. first problem he wanted me to sing like an opra star which i hated. second because im female he thought i should sing in high c when in reality i sing in e flat almost a bass. i have thought about going back to vocal lessons now that im older and can appriciate it more unlike my childhood days. but if i did go back i would be sure to find a teacher that i liked how they sang and wanted to sing like them because from my experinces they arnt stisfied untill u sing like them lol. the basic breathing tecniques are very important to learn and they help alot its surpizing just how much diffrence they make. but i think i have learned just as much about singing from listing to my own recorded voice and trying to change it and minipulate it without using effects on it. push yourself to learn more than just rock music vocals. you can learn alot from other kinds of music. even though i dont like all of them ive found some take alot more pratice and hard work to perform. hopes this helps you in your decission

My voice sux...for lack of a better term, hard to believe I actually used to SOLO for a living. Obviously I never had voice lessons, don't know if even that would have made my voice any better. My daughter, has a beautiful voice that needs nurtured, vocal lessons would indeed help her take something that has a good base to start with and make it better. I would wager to say that unless someone has an outstanding voice to start with, that before they reached the top of the food chain in the music biz...they probably had a few voice lessons.
