Britain these days is, sadly, the land of the "manufactured" pop band, and the recording studios employ singing teachers.
If they didn't the stuff that's churned out would be even more dire than it is. Also many pop/rock singers diversify into musicals, for example, and they need to train for these. Madonna had intensive vocal coaching for her part in Evita.
A substantial minority of untrained singers actually abuse their voices (screaming and straining for example) and damage their vocal chords. It's worth taking the time to learn the basics of correct singing technique.
Not every vocal coach specialises exclusively in Classical music. The best teacher I ever had was an expert in Broadway, but we worked on a bit of jazz, and some pop as well. There are important elements common to all styles of singing, such as good breath control and support, and an awareness of vocal health.
Tell your teacher from the outset what you hope to achieve by taking lessons, and perhaps have a couple of trial sessions before commiting yourself long-term. Singing lessons are a great morale booster: I hope you find a good coach. Enjoy yourself!
