Is there a way to remove the vocal from a mono track as to analyze the background noise?

We had a really strange experience recording last night and had items in our house move while recording and it's all caught on the audio, and we want to isolate those/remove the vocal so we can hear what went on better.
 
From a mono track you're pretty well left with selective equalisation, compression and expansion as your only real tools. Nulling out is not possible on mono tracks.
