Current Events Songs

So...
Was just wondering how many songs will be inspired by the events of 09/11/01.

Anyone got one in the works?

(I don't think I'm personally capable of writing a song about such a serious topic...)

It didn't take CSN&Y too long to get 'Ohio' out...

Yes, I do. . .

"Upside-Down World"

What would you do if the world was turned upside-down?/
Everything you knew was lost and never found?/
Could you fill the space?/
Could you find your place?/
What would you do if the world was turned upside-down?/

What would you do if the world ended today?/
Would you be able to find your way?/
Would it be the same?/
Would you feel no shame?/
What would you do if the world ended today?/

Chorus: Woke up today and heard the news/
Seems somebody, somewhere, has got the blues/
Everywhere you turn, bad news in the air/
Times like these, life doesn't seem fair/
But when the winds blow the hardest/
The roots grow the deepest/
A wise man told me, "This is so. . ./
Son, if you'll just look inside your soul."/

What would you do if all the clowns disappeared?/
Would you laugh to dry your tears?/
Could you smile?/
Even just for awhile?/
What would you do if the clowns disappeared?/

The End

Inspired originally by "Planet of the Apes" (the ORIGINAL), tweaked today in reference to current events, the economy, etc. etc.

Pandora's Box: 9/11

The darkest door opens
Enough to look inside
I can't believe the things I see
I feel the people die
The awe inspired by man
The greatness of his construction
Adds up to insignificance
On the day if it's destruction

The fire curls in the air
The smoke devours the sky
Souls lost up above
This surreal play in my eye
The power of Hate now etched in time
The humanness of sin
Pandora's Box has opened wide
To loose the beast within

[Chorus]
God help me - I've lost my patience
God help me - I've lost my innocence
Who can take the darkness
Bring it to the light
I cannot see with these angry eyes
I cannot cry with these dusty tears
Will someone close the door before
There's nothing left to fight for anymore

The Aftermath comes slowly
Dust settles to the ground
Amazed and stunned at what I see
As I take a look around
I see the human spirit
I feel it in the air
From our hearts it reaches out
To show the world we care

This door that now has opened
Cannot be closed again
But know now more than ever that
The Hate will never win.

[Repeat Chorus]

I wrote this a couple of days after to an idea i had created on acoustic guitar a short while ago. It's a draft, I've already started recording it but I've got to finalise the vocals and guitars and add some keyboards.

I can't imagine it
To me it isn't real
I can't imagine that
To me it isn't real
I don't want to feel that way
The pain, there is no reasoning with the pain.

Hold on, hold on
Hold on, hold on

Hold on tight
Keep your memories near
Hold on tight
Hidden in the fear
I can't stop your tears
Strength in ourselves
We've got to help each other
to hold on

Hold on, hold on
Hold on, hold on

In this day of change
When distance means nothing
Why are our (worlds/minds/lives) so far apart?

Hold on, hold on
Hold on, hold on
Hold on

Jamie Smith (13/9/2001)

PS I completely revised the second verse as I was typing it out on here.

I didn't write a song but after I watched both towers fall to the ground, I wrote a short poem while my thoughts and emotions of the events were still in their newborn state.

Thousands of voices are silenced
By the thunder of hate crashing down
Tears fall on ash covered faces
Praying that loved ones are found

The innocent leap from the terror
Down to the sea of tears
An act of hate filled convictions
Has angered this nation beyond fear

Justice must somehow be served
An all who are guilty must pay
But who holds the pen for tomorrow
As we face an unwritten day

Well.. it finally happened

Usually when something bad happens I don’t feel like playing guitar or doing anything music related. But I was at home sittin’ around doing nothing but getting more and more pissed at the tragedy (along with some personal stuff).. I finally forced myself to try to work on some music, and I made a little progress on some unfinished material.. But it was the last half hour of playing that really hit home: I am not the most technical right-hand riffer, never quite clocking the speed of my favorite thrash tunes.. but my anger kicked in, and I ended up with a furiously fast and heavy motif.. along with a fuel injected slower slab of metal in a 7/8 groove.. I was playing so hard and fast the muscles under my elbow started hurting.. but I got it on tape.. Inspiration doesn’t normally go this route to get to me.. But it did, and I feel that I have a responsibility to see this through..
