The signal chain.

I am new to this forum and hope this post is in the right place.
My question is i want to record acoustic drums and im having a small problem with advice i have recieved on recording.
The question i have is this, is it ok to use the mic. gain on my mixer on a kick drum? One guy who does this for a living told me it is not a good idea. Also isthis signal chain right.
mic>pre on mackie 1642>hardware comp.>layla 24/96 sound card or should it be
mic>hardware comp>to line in on mixer for eq.>layla 24/96
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. :(
 
You wouldn't want to put your outboard gear before your pre since your preamp is what brings up your signal up to line level.


So the signal flow goes as follows:

Mic-> to mixer-> Outboard comp-> your soundcard



As for the advice that guy told you, probably better to disregard it. ;)
