Recording Cello and Piano?

I am needing to record an audition CD for my youngest son on very short notice. The piano is a spinet in my classroom. I am using Sonar 6 PE, but only have access to an EV PL95 and a Shure SM58 right now. How would the collective wisdom on this forum handle mic placement? Overhead in the proximity of each instrument or close?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Ouch...

58 a few inches from the soundboard of the piano (depending on the piece, you'll have to decide *where* along the soundboard. If the player is heavy handed, towards the bottom probably center-right - Gentle, a little higher and upper-left), 95 a few inches away from the lower quarter on the soundboard of the cello.

Don't expect much. But that should capture about as good as you're going to capture with those mics.

Either mic will fall flat more than a few inches away from the source. You're not going to get "sparkling airy ambience" - But you'll get the meat of the instruments.
