I just want to transfer my old vinyl LPs to CD
I've only just got a CD player cos I didn't think they would catch on!
Ive got a cd r/w and an ok sound card which came with nero software
I recall that about a year ago I saw advertised a small program for doing just what I want but now i cant find it.

Any suggestions gratefully received.

Hello, simpleone.

Purchase a RCA to 1/8" (stereo) patch cord.

Then, go to the Sonic Foundry website:

http://www.sonicfoundry.com

Download the demo version of Sound Forge.

Connect your phonograph to your home stereo system.

Connect the RCA OUTS (L and R) of your H.S.S. to the 1/8" LINE IN of your computer.

Open Sound Forge.

Press the record button

On the new screen press the NEW button, check the STEREO box.

Then, check the MONITOR box.

Adjust the output levels of your H.S.S.

Then press record.

After you have recorded your song you can TRIM the WAV. file (by truncating the dead air space at the beginning and end of the recorcing).

There are other programs that you can use (and can be downloaded for FREE).

I am sure some of the other individuals on this BBS will have some more ideas for your transference of vinyl to CD.

Happy recording :)

Peace

thanks very much
I did pretty much what you said except that I used the recorder and wave studio that came with my creative sound card.
I tried filtering out hiss seemed to work ok
then I tried to burn a CD and I keep getting errors write errors
I'm using Samsung CD-R 74s silver and I have done the speed test in nero so im recording at 2X
. The drive is a Ricoh MP9060A.

So far I've got a load of christmas carols on the Hard drive and three ruined CD-rs with about half a track on each
I managed to get the whole lot burned onto a CD-RW in one go, but that will only read in the ricoh drive, the "normal" CD player won't even acknowledge its existence!

what am I doing wrong?

That's a strange one. Your not running any other background applications that may be interfering with the burn, and your not doing other stuff while it's burning?

Try hitting CTRL/ALT/Delete and end task everything except explorer and systray. Turn off any screen savers/virus scanners (the ctrl/alt/delete should take care of those). Launch your cd-recording software and try again.

Nero can be very fussy.
Can you get your hands on another application for burning?
I have nero and cd maker pro.I use them both..

Just a guess, but make sure that the wave files you are creating are 16-bit and 44100 Hz. Any other formats won't burn to an audio CD.

Also make sure your HD isn't almost full. Are these errors you're getting described as buffer under-run errors? Some smaller, older HDs will pass the transfer rate test before you've stored what you plan to burn to CDR, then crap out due to the transfer rate going way down as the HD tries to access the last 100 MB on the drive. My P90 used to pull this crap even burning at 2x. As long as I emptied it out a bit before trying to burn a disc, the errors went away.

thanks to everyone
I have emptied the systray of every thing except explorer and systray usibng alt-ctrl-del
I am sure my .wav files are the right format
The hard drive is a new 30gig with plenty of space (so far)
the errors are described as write errors. an error log is produced and i will paste below the bit showing the failure
. my drive is an IDE drive and it looks to newbie me that ther are too many references to SCSI for comfort.
any comments?
also the drive is a 9060a not a 9060 and i think that i've seen zip drives distinguished IDE/SCSI with the addition of an "A" suffix

I'm going to look for another burning program as suggested!
but i'd still like to know what's wrong

have you tried burning at 1x. Have you tried using different brand cd's....I'm never any good with that computer language stuff, but someone here is..Maybe you could practice on a rewritable..I use one when I have problems just to test a few ways and not waist any cd's
I have nero 4.0

Thanks very much.
It made sense BUT it turned out that the problem was, that I needed to update the busmaster driver as my biostar motherboard has a VIA chipset.( even though my machine is only a few weeks old ) i downladed the 4 in 1 pack from them, and apart from installing some driver(s) in the wrong directory, it works ok. I can now burn at 4X. However it seems to have screwed up my printing from MS Word, which now freezes whenever I change the print quality from normal, to best or draft.
this advice was in the nero help file, but i had mistakenly discounted it, thinking that on a new machine, no update would be required. thanks again to everyone who helped, all advice was good and will be useful in the long run.
I am impressed!

You might want to try removing and reinstalling Word to see if that fixes your "new" problem. I, for one, would never have guessed at the fix to your original problem. That's why I hate computers :)
