Sidechain compression

I'm working on a reggae song that has heavy bass and kick that share the same subsonic regions of the spectrum. I'm trying to emphasize the attack of the kick so that it's not buried in the mix.

I've read a bit about sidechain compression that will "duck" the bass line with each kick hit. When I select sidechain in the compressor on the bass track, the drum track is not available as a selection. (Using Logic Pro X)

Am I correct in the way to go about doing this? Am I missing something? What are some other common uses for sidechaining?

Thanks in advance for any assistance you may be able to provide.

Don't know logic but you add a send to the kick track, set send fader to 0, use that send to trigger the side chain on the compressor for the bass.

Just to calify I mean set send volume up to 0dB. You want a good signal hitting the side chain
