webcam monitoring?

This is really about music videos. But it is related to videos and music.

I want to be able to record myself whilst in "the studio" to document things so I don't have to write settings down, or take pictures of all sorts of placement.
At first I figured I'd just put a regular video camera and/or a flip on a tripod and go. But. Battery and storage limitations of 2 hours make it pointless.

Is it possible to get a usb webcam and have it running/recording "round the clock" into some program?

I would look for a camera with USB connection and buy an external hard drive. 1TB harddrives aren't really that expensive these days, and will last for a looong time if you reduce the video quality.
