Some of my stuff on mp3.com

Hello everyone; This is my first post here. I recently upgraded my 'home studio' and recorded some songs. You can find tham at the link below. They are mostly acoustic guitar oriented with bass, some electric guitar, and vocals. I'd be interested in hearing some feedback before I get too far into this recording thing so that I don't have to re-do a lot of stuff. I use a Rode NT-1 mic into a Mackie 1202VLZ-Pro mixer, then thru a Darla24 soundcard into Cakewalk ProAudio9. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks! Rick M.

Rick, that was nice, man! Mix sounded good to me, as a matter of fact, can you tell me how you recorded the acoustic guitars.

I have a very hard time recording my acoustic guitars... If I use the mic/pickup that's built into my acoustic guits, it sound horrible... do you mic your guitars? What's your setup?

Great job.

Thanks for the compliments! Teddie, here's my setup:
I run the signal (see below) into a Mackie 1202VLZ Pro mixer, into a Darla24 soundcard, then into Cakewalk Pro Audio 9.
For acoustic guitars, I use either a 2-mic setup or a 1-mic setup. For the 2-mic setup, I place a Rode NT-1 large condenser mic about 18 inches away from the soundhole to my left and aim it at the soundhole at an angle of about 45 degrees. I use an AT831b small condenser mic also 18 inches away, but aimed from the right at 45 degrees toward the soundhole. I record each mic on a separate track at the same time to give it a stereo effect and usually pan one signal hard left and the other hard right. For the 1-mic setup, I just use the Rode from the left.
For electric guitars and bass, I run them into a Line 6 Pod with whatever settings suit the tone I am looking for. I run the bass into ‘Pod Clean’ with all of the EQ’s flat and compression at the 12 o’clock position.
For vocals, I use the Rode from a distance of about 6 inches and sing into it at about a 45 degree angle from the face of it.
Specifically, in “For Heather...”, I used my Martin J-40M with the 2-mic setup, my Goodall Aloha GC (for sale, by the way) for the embellishments with 2-mics, my Seagull S12+ (also for sale) with 1-mic for the rhythm in the right channel, my Backpacker thru 1-mic and the Pod’s Leslie simulator for the warbly phrases in the choruses, my old Yamaha FG-331 with nylon strings thru 1-mic for the little runs at the ends of the choruses, my Fender Standard Telecaster thru the Pod with Leslie simulator for the solo in the middle, my Danelectro 59-DC-12 (which I converted to a 12-string) for background during the solo, and my Fender P-Bass Special run direct into the Mackie (before I decided to use the Pod for it). It was fun to use all my guitars in one song! (that was before I owned my Taylor 414).
“Legacy” was just my Martin with a 1-mic setup, a copy of that track made and delayed a bit and panned hard left and right.
“All My Life” was 2 separate takes of the Taylor 414 with 1-mic setup panned hard left and right, Goodall thru 1-mic for embellishments, the Yamaha strung with the high octave strings from a 12-string set into 1-mic to add sparkle in the right channel, and the bass into the Pod using a hard felt pick to give it more punch and a more even sound than I can get with my fingers.
“Song of the Seagull” was my Seagull into the 2-mic setup with no effects and done in one take. Most of what I do takes many, many takes, so it was nice to do something fast and simple for a change.

I'd love to hear any suggestions anyone has for improving my recording setup. One thing I am missing is a compressor for final mixing...can anyone recommend a good one for PC? Thanks! Rick M.

downloaded "Legacy" and "All My Life"....I'm not into folk music at all,and I'm not a professional reviewer like all those people in the mags, but I know a good mix when I hear one.....the acoustic guitar had a great sound, the bass fit perfectly in the mix, and the vocal/vocals were clear, strong, and on key.....nice nice......gibs

Damn! The Express URL don't work. I'll check this later.

I did an acoustic piece much the same way as RPM did, regarding mike choice and placement:

(I really wanna hear this... Trying something else)

Wait a sec- I got in through search. Hot damn! RPM, you ever hear of Jim Earp?

Your playing and singing sounds like him:

VERY good recordings, Rick! (and the songs are pretty good too)

:)

Listened to "All My Life" and "For Heather...". Both were very well done, not much to add there. MP3 encoding is weird: the highs in "All My Life" sounded pretty crisp. The highs in Heather were mangled, in comparison. Go figure.

Thanks for the feedback! I think maybe what's going on with the encoding is that I few days ago, I replaced all of the files on mp3.com. Initially, I used Shuffler to encode, and heard a swishy sort of sound. I replaced the files with ones that I used MusicMatch to encode. Hopefully that's what the difference is from.

BTW, if you're using MusicMatch 4.4 or 5, it might be better to use the "lowest" quality setting rather than the "very high" quality setting. You can check the gory details by following the analysis link at http://www.r3mix.net/ -- yes, I'm an encoder junkie :D. I haven't used MM in a long time, so I haven't tested it myself.

Legacy

I lost my Father last May.....and your song Legacy made me give way to tears....Hopefully a song equally as beautiful and reflective will come to me someday, till now it hasnt...but when it does i will have my home studio programed to receive..nice song Rick...., your Dad would be proud.

mknight: Thanks for the kind words...I appreciate it. It's replies like yours (and all of the other compliments I have received) that make the entire creative process worthwhile.

pglewis: Thanks for the links about encoder quality...I'll be sure to check them all out before I get too far into this process.

Rick

Hey Rick, nice tunes. I'm with Teddie and everyone else on this, these guitars sound great. I listened to "Song of the Seagull" and was very impressed. You guys keep plugging that Rodent and you're making me think that I should have one in my future. Sounds good Rick!

Quite night

Rick, you have a great sound dude. I'm just hanging in the studio listening to some of the people on the board and sipping beer and happened across your thread. Very nice songwriting and production.
