Panning

Does anyone pan more than one thing the same distance left and right

eg. Guitar1 +40 left
Guitar 2 +40 right
Keyboard + 40 left
Guitar 3 +40 right

Only I read a mixing article where it explained how to pan instruments but it dosent make sense. How can the keyboard + guitarist be standing in the same place in the stero field? It just seems dumb to me any opinions?
 
I usually try and pan things a bit different myself. But again, it's kind of whatever sounds good. If panning like that sounds fine, it works. If not, you will have to experiment.

Good call......and is that Flavor Flav in your avatar?
 
If you think about the stereo field in 3d then it makes a little more sense.

Think of it as

up down
left right
forward back

Reverb is used to go back
compression can help bring things forward.
