High pass filter is pretty common as a first step in mixing a lot of tracks to eliminate muddiness. Bumping the mids and highs tends to add clarity and "sparkle" to a vocal track. It can also add sibilance too though, so don't bump the db's too high.
What it boils down to is your last sentence, whatever works for you and your mix is the right thing to do, who cares if plenty of people do it?
I find cutting the mids a bit sometimes helps my vocal tracks, but that might be a characteristic of my mic.
