I've got an RME 400 firewire interface and a mac desktop, but I'm looking at getting a pc laptop (sony vaio). I've heard that RME 400's are best (or only) compatible with computers with texas intsruments firewire.
How do you check if a laptop has Texas instruments firewire, also is it true that texas instruments firewire is the only way to go rme firewire interfaces?

TI and Lucent are the preferred firewire chipsets for audio interfaces.
(Doesn't hurt to check the interface manufacturer's website - they SHOULD know what works and what doesn't...)

System Control Panel > Hardware Tab > Device Manager
Look for "IEEE 1394 Bus Host Controllers" and expand it.
Should say "Texas Instruments OHCI Compliant IEEE1394 Host Controller"
