recording with m-audio fast track 2

I'm recording vocals with the m-audio fast track 2. And on the interface it has a mic gain knob, a guitar gain knob and a ouput knob. what is the output knob need for? I don't have any output cables plugged into it. But when i adjust the output gain it adjusts the volume of the mic. I'm really confused here..

Also, how quiet should I have my mic gain and output gain at ? almost down as low as it can go or halfway? I sing at the volume nearer my talking volume.

well.. i'm new to recording. I don't know how to listen to backing track through my headphones.. I burn the backing track to a cd and play it on my hi-fi and listen to it through the speakers. I guess thats wrong? it has always sounded wrong haha.

if you could tell me how to listen to the backing track through speakers whilst I record my vocals.. that would be much apprecaited.
