main outs vs. turning down the volume in the comp

Ok, i've seen a lot of posts lately with people advising if you are distorting your inputs to turn down the level of the input down in software. I have to disagree with this. Keep the line in level at max, and turn down your main outs (or whatever you are feeding into your soundcard at that point in time... The only thing that could happen is you will get LESS noise from your mixer, when you turn the volume down of the sound you turn down the volume of the noise as well. Less noise = better.
