How do you get that Distorted vocal sound like The Strokes do

We've been messing around with the PC and a Zoom mrs1266 and basically can't seem to find what we need, the vocal sounds to soft and clean and doesn't sit in the mix well, we are a rock outfit, think strokes. Are there any VST's or hardware available that can do the cranked vocal thing but retain clarity and warmth.

We've been using a crappy effect but its tooo much i think,

if you wanna listen to it go here and you'll get what i mean....

hey aware.

well i'm not sure but i think what the strokes do is they use a small guitar amp (like 8 inch speaker) and sing though that and mic it. I think they use other techniques as well but that is one of em. I know there was a long thread about it already in the microphone forum maybe? do a search and i think something will come up for sure.

take the high pass and low pass down to nothing on an eq and you'll get an am radio kind of sound.

On the way to the sound you want.

Also, that guy uses too much of that distortion crap on his vocals - sorry just a blurb
