can't get midi to work!

I can't seem to get my midi keyboard to play sounds from my PC (SB16 synth or Roland Virtual Sound Canvas). I am using a Yamaha DX100 keyboard going midi out and in to a "Y" midi adapter that plugs into the joystick port of my SB-16. I'm using PowerTracks Pro 6 software. I think I have midi device drivers set correctly - midi in= AWE64 MIDI IN(300) and midi out = AWE64 MIDI SYNTH(620)also ROLAND SOUND CANVAS (but not at the same time).

Is there any way to test my midi through windows to eliminate the PowerTracks software? Are there other settings that I should check. Should my midi keyboard be set to a certain channel? Should "OMNI" be on or off?
 
Try a search on www for "midi software monitors". Should be a whole bunch of W95/98 ones that'll let you know if your midi's getting out.
