Echo Layla 3G (or Audiofire) preamp question

Hey all,
I own one and love it. Just curious if anyone has gotten some real use out of the pre's on it. I've used them for scratch vox tracks, and thought they were OK, but I'm wondering about any other users that have used them for other purposes - maybe overheads, stereo acoustic tracking, etc. I know they're not stellar pre's, but has anyone gotten some decent tracks that they were able to get into a mix pretty good?

I want to recommend it to a friend (more likely one of the AudioFire's which are basically the same except Firewire as opposed to PCI), but he won't be able to afford getting any other pre's right away. I really haven't used them enough as I have other pre's I rely on, and since he plays acoustic and will want to track two channels at a time. I thought of recommending a DMP3 to supplement the Echo, but I don't really know that it would be that big of an improvement. I used to own a DMP3 and like it a lot, but couldn't say how it stacks up with the pre's on the Echo.
