Tascam ATR-60

Ok, I'm all ready to buy a 38 for just $200 when I see an ad in my local paper for a Tascam ATR-60 8trk 1/2 for $600.

I understand this was a pure pro unit. Compared to the the semi-pro 38, both being 8trk 1/2 format would the ATR-60 be a big step up, if so, why? Pros and cons of owning this huge piece of gear?

Thanks All!

It all depends on the condition and whether you can find the autolocator. The ATR is pretty bullet proof and will take more use without having to calibrate after every rewind :)

The ATR60 series decks will offer far more robust transports and better quality heads and supporting electronics. They will work more reliably and sound better but, they require more real estate and more muscle to move them or ship them.

If you have a stable location where you're not moving from in the foreseeable future, I'd go for one of those over the 38.

By the way, I do own a 38 and am happy with its sound and performance but its a Chevy Malibu compared to the Coupe de Ville!

Cheers! :)
