3 head tape deck

A 3-head deck is a tape recorder that has separate playback/record heads, with the record head about 3/16" or so (it varies) before the playback head.

Their biggest advantage is they they allow direct monitoring of the actual signal as recorded to tape (although they usually allow you to monitor the source or the tape.)

In delay/echo usage, the delay time is controlled by varying the distance between the rec/play heads - this is usually easier on reel-type recorders -- cassette-based recorders don't allow easy manipulation of the head distances.
