I found an Otari MX-7000 1/4 inch 2 track... apparently modified to an 8 track (wtf?) Includes 8 preamps... looks to be in incredible condition for its age, all housed in 2 solid timber cabinets for extreme cheap...

is this any good??
how much would a full service set me back?
how much maintence is required...
are these preamps any good? does anyone recognise them?

thanks...

 Never had that type before, but if you can see/tryout the thing before you buy, it would be worth it, If its cheap enough I'de scarf on it now!!

The whole thing looks like a total custom job that could probably only be serviced properly by the guy who built it.

Is he still alive?

Does it come with a service manual?

Are you a die hard DIY'er?

Answer no to any two of those questions and I would say forget it!

Even if the unit is in 100% working condition, 8 tracks on 1/4" tape with no noise reduction is not a true ideal format to be working with. Find yourself an old Ampex one inch, 8 track and then you've got something to really play with.

Cheers! :)
