Hi Folks, anyone here build their own tube mic pre? If so what iron have you used? The JT-115K-E from Jensen seems to be whats recommended, but has any other iron that's been tried?

If you're interested and can comment, take a look at this link at let me know if maybe the 850L or 850N might do it. These are $125 CDN each, and can be had locally. Specs do look pretty good 20hz - 20kHz +/- 0.5 dB (although it does say that units with impedence above 5k MAY be down 1db at 20khz. The spec also states 1.5% THD at 20Hz when the transformer is running at FULL rated current. Thats not too bad at that low freq...

You might check out this site

AKA Pats Tube Site he seems very knowledgable.

There was a long thread about six months back here entitled "building our own mic pre" . I tried to get a direct link for you to click using the search function but it would not pull anything up for me but I know its there.

I found some very useful answers on this sites:

(send him an email, very friendly and knowledgable)

(they have an english section, too)

no toobe, but he has helped me quiete a bit, too.

I can only guess if any of the above will get you any further, as i am into transformerless solidstate designs.
What i have read is that people sometimes use lundahl trannies instead of jensens (especially in europe).
