Which Mic To Buy

Im looking for a great mic to use for general purposes (micing amps and vocals) for use with a roland VS recorder. My budget can free up about $100 maybe a little more. What kind (brand and model) of mic would work the best, quality wise, for the money?
Ive also heard alot about the SM-57's. Can you tell me about these mics and if they may be right for my use.

If you can scrounge $199, Marshall has a new large diaphragm condenser. I haven't read any reviews on it, but for the money I don't think you could go wrong (IMHO). - My large condenser serves as an all purpose mic, & I wouldn't hesitate to spend the cash again.

The descriptions of the newer Roland VS series in catalogs like musicians friend suggest that these units have "mic modeling" that use the sm 57 or Roland D series mics as standard inputs. I'd bet there is more info available at the Roland website.
