direct vs micing amp

I'm going to record electric guitar mostly only melodies without chords and I don't know if it's a better idea to mic my practice amp (I can't afford a nice amp so upgrading that is out of the question) or if I should record directly into my soundcard. any suggestions on ways to try to mic my amp or should I just give it up and record direct?

Hi Mooringp,
What mics do you have? Do you have a preamp or a mixer?
With a Di, or splitter, you can do both, go into the pedal then one out into the soundcard as a direct track, while going out another out of the pedal into an amp, then you can use a mixer, or a preamp for the mic on the amp. Shure Sm57 is a very commonly used mic for mic'ng guitar amps. You can use a direct track alone, a mic'd track alone, or both at the same time.

As per placement of the mic. The following links may help you.

Also, do a search in the recording techniques section. I've found a lot of info from doing searches there.
