Another Microphone Noise Issue Thread (Zoom H4n)

I'm experiencing a really strange problem (at least to me) with a Zoom H4n portable stereo recorder that I recently acquired. Basically half the time there is no problem at all, just the normal noise floor hiss caused by the drivers and the in-built condenser mics.

But quite often I'll turn it on, hit record and there is a static noise that stops and starts in the right mic only. Here are two examples, one without the noise and one with.

Let me know if the above links don't work!

On one occasion I did a factory reset and this seemed to fix it, but within ten minutes the noise was back, and subsequent resets haven't worked. Now the problem seems to come and go at will. I've tried moving far away (outside) from other electrical equipment but this makes no difference. However, I've noticed that when I point the recorder towards my laptop the static starts to get louder and has a buzzing tone to it.

Is anyone familiar with this type of problem with interference, microphones or digital recorders? I'm by no means an audio wizard so I have no idea what could be causing this. Cheers.
