What's up w/ active bass?

Every time I see a 5-string bass that's nice; it's an active bass. Sure actives are probably good for live use, but I hate using it for recording purposes.

I recently tried out a Spector NS2000 active bass for direct recording. It sounded horrible on record because the output is so high that distortion occurs.

Every single company is going nuts over this "Active Trend"; it sucks.

I wanted a Fender Precision bass with passive pick-ups and 5 strings but there are only avaliable in 4 strings. Dang!

Anyone feel the same way as I do?

I'm really not trying to take the piss out of you, but just turn the volume knob on the bass down to 5. Tone knobs too. The preamp won't be applying any boost to the signal that way. Something to try anyway.
