Question about old DiMarzio HS-2 pickup

I have this DiMarzio HS-2 pickup - based on the patent date, I believe it dates to 1984 or earlier.

When I removed it from the pickguard it had been residing in for 30 years (the pickguard hasn't been in a guitar for 25 years), the two coils came apart.

My question is, should the coils separate easily? There seems to be remnants of adhesive. If they are supposed to be stuck together, what is the best way to fix it?

I'm no expert, but since it is just a stacked humbucker, as long as no wires are broken or damaged, I'd bet you can just stick it back together. It might not have ever been actually glued together. That "adhesive" you see might simply be wax. It should have a cover or tape around the coils.

Contact Dimarzio and see what they say.

Thanks. Can't really see in the pictures, but there is a tape of sorts around each coil.

I will check with DiMArzio or post on the user forum there.
