Almost all upright basses used in non-orchestral settings are 3/4 size - it's the size you want.

You won't find a whole lot of people who know a lot about a large number of brands, because very few people have a bunch of them lying around, and they are rather expensive. You can spend hundreds or you can spend thousands, and because they ARE made of wood, there are wide variations even in the same model.

The big price break is between basses with laminated (plywood) tops and ones with carved solid-wood tops. Most people get along fine with plywood, and it is sturdier and less prone to damage from the elements.

I started out with a very nice old Kay back in '75, and these old ones are still sought after. Unfortunately, it was crushed in a bus accident. I then spent $800 on a new plywood-topped Czech bass, a good bass which I've had ever since.

Setup and choice of strings are VERY significant with upright basses, too. It can definitely make the difference between your wanting to play it or not.

You should pop over to http://www.talkbass.com for some more information.

When I get rich I'll buy a REALLY nice one.
