Sony MDR-7506 hiss problem

Maybe some people can clear this up for me. I bought a pair of
7506s a couple months ago. I was completely in love with them.
Great seal, comfort, and sound. I use them for checking for
problems while tracking and nuance listening to mixes etc. Well...
a month or two later I hooked them into my sony stereo for a
little listening for pleasure and noticed that, even before the cd
started playing, I'm getting a constant hiss. I thought it was the
stereo, so I plugged them into another sony boombox I have, and I'm getting the same hiss. I start a cd on either system and
the sound is ok, but the hiss is still there, to the point that during
the quieter parts in the songs, you can distictly hear this hiss. I
as completely shocked. I went back to my computer and plugged
them in..no hiss. I plugged them into yet another cheap boombox
and there's the hiss. I then take a cheapo pair of headphones
that came with a discman. I plug them into all of the afore-
mentioned stereos and NO hiss can be heard!! What in the world
is going on here?? Are these headphones so sensitive that
background distortion in the circuitry is being amplified and
transmitted through the 7506s? Why is the computer output,
which should be more noisy from all that I know, hiss-free, but a
dedicated stereo isn't? Have I got a buggy pair of cans?? All
opinions are welcome. Thanks..

That sounds right to me. Wouldn't you expect consumer-level equipment to have more hiss than pro-sumer stuff? Just goes to show you how powerful those cans are. I have a pair as well, and I can hear little artifacts my amp makes that I had no idea about.

I'm with Whoopysnorp on this...

Consumer grade equipment is the problem, not the cans.

Thanks for the input. I think you guys are probably right. It's amazing how low the fidelity is on consumer grade equipment! Another interesting paradox in all of this is that consumer grade headphones actually sound "better" with the consumer grade stereo than the professional headphones. When I go stereo shopping, I think I'll take my 7506s along and plug them into any prospective stereo and have a listen to just the sound of powered plug in. Out of curiousity, what are some of the best "bang for your buck" higher-end stereos? Thanks.

That could be due to the sony's extended HF response or, they may also be more efficient than the others. -are they perhaps slightly louder than the others at the same volume setting? I know they are a lot louder than the AKG 240's. (I like both but their completly different sounds.:)
Check out the hiss on high efficiency monitors like horn loaded JBL's and such.
