In my everlasting search for improved sound quality and control, I've been reading up on Mini Bass Heads. I'm attracted to their small size, soundshaping abilities and, mostly, their XLR Pre/Post DI Outs. I'm not too concerned with their power ratings since I won't be running a cab(s) or playing out with them. For now, I'm just looking into recording with one with the possibility of (maybe) jamming or playing out sometime in the future.. or not.
After watching videos, reading reviews and forum user's posts, one thing keeps popping up with certain models: Fan Noise
At least one Mfr replied to an amp owner stating either fans or heatsinks had to be used. Since heatsinks for their power ratings would have to be much too large for their Mini enclosures, fans were selected. Noise was an accepted trade-off and is normal since these were intended for larger live performance venues. This was in answer to a user's inquiry - his amp's fan was very noisy in home usage.. even in a full band practice situation.
At first, this noise bothered me. But then I realized if I were to use one of these in my bedroom studio I wouldn't be running it while tracking vocals or miking something, so it could work out ok.
Does anyone have experience using one of these in their studio (going DI) - fan noise a problem?
Just a couple of example amps for visual refference :
