JunUnplugged,

It seems that the absolute best mics for recording acoustic guitars are condensors, such as the MXL 603s and Oktava MC-012's....

I went to Sam Ash Sunday and I was confused. I got mixed up with model numbers and the one's I wanted, they didn't have but they had some I heard of but didn't remember exaclty what, etc. So of course, I got nothing.

If I'm going from dynamics to condensors, I don't even know what to expect. What I should do is borrow some first. Someone also suggested a search on mp3's posted with the different mic's used. but there's a lot of other variations besides that in each mix....

even if i go w/ the bare minimum expense, 2 cheap condensor mics, 1 acoustic, 1 vocal, and a preamp/phantom power that's $300 and not even stereo and it's just an experiment. Can I rent this stuff? I think I saw a post about renting, off I go to search....

The type of stuff you can rent is high end stuff. No one rents out the type of budget mics we talk about on this board. I would say that if you're serious about recording you need to just dive in and buy a rig, slowly but surely. I don't think renting would be anything but a waste of your money.

More cow bell!!! (SLN referrence)

F.S.

Teeeeee! Reminds me of an inside joke among musicians I'm currently working with. You wouldn't happen to play in a Latin Rock band would you? :D

Oh, I guess I could actually contribute to the thread by staying on topic:

My setup's so basic. An SM58 (live vocals), 2 MXL 603s, 1 Rode NT2. I have access to 3 SM57s and a CAD drum-mic pack, but I haven't used it yet for the next round of drums. I'd like to get another LD condenser that is different from the NT, to complement it, but I've been pretty happy so far. I just record myself and the musicians in projects I'm directly involved with.

Good point.

I was considering a pair of 603 or 012 for acoustic and a v67 for vocal, an Art single tube pre MP Studio V3 and Amp dual rack TPS pre for the pair, then I realized, duh, I can only record 2 tracks at a time.

Then since I don't even know what I'm gonna be getting with condensors vs my dynamics, I'll just start by trying out a large diaphragm w/ single preamp. But that seems to be used more for vocals, and my voice doesn't need to be heard so much more clearer than my SM-58. So why bother.

Next I figured ok, get a smaller diaphragm (and a premap) for mono acoustic, but then I been reading that X/Y stereo makes for a nice big acoustic sound. Once again, why bother, so now I think I'm going to:
1. get a second SM-57 (already have one) so I can X/Y my acoustic (and no preamp) - rec in 2 track stereo
2. dub the vocal mono w/ existing SM-58

and Save for decent monitor speaks

this'll run me only $100 or so, instead of all the other options are at least double, up to $350 or so....

This way I can see if X/Y really is worth it, also ya can always use another sm-57 forever and ever. Also, if X/Y is not so great, when I do get a condensor, i'll only need one small diaphragm mic and a one channel pre.

Anyone have solo acoustic guitar and vocal mp3's I can check out?

Dang, I have some serious catching up to do... :D

Rode NT2 ($400)
AKG D112 ($220)
4 Radio Shack 33-3032 ($30 each)
Radio Shack Small Diaphram Condensor (I got it for free so I don't know the actual price)

Total:
7 mics = $740

Next on the list...
Marshall 603 (pair)
SP C3
Stephen Paul Mic (One of these days!)

Marshall MXL990
.........

I now am beginning to see a couple mentions of the MXL 990... I added one to my collection, as well. What do you all think of it? I did one recording. I have no experience prior with Large Diaphram Condensers, but I did like the results of recording vocal with this. It was very similar to my MXL 603s mic in sound...as one might expect...Marshall told me that it was, in fact, the same electronics. It was a little brighter, though. I think it will satisfy my needs for a long time to come....

The 4047 has a tranny in it so it has a rounder sound to it. This might be a good match for an overly bright voice. So would a good Octava MC-319.

I refuse to post due to the fact that you guys will laugh at me and then I'll have to sell my kids CHRISTmas presents so I can purchase a shitload of good mics...

Oh Well

Beh (cough), Be (hack), Behrin (sniff)... B1

OK do it, laugh and ruin my kids CHRISTmas. :)
