There's a Soundelux U99 (similar in sound to a Neumann U67) on ebay right now - starting bid $1600. If I had a little extra cashola right now I'd be all over that.

I own a Neumann M149. I have used it for the past 8 years, it is definitely a good mic. I don' t think that there is such thing as "the best vocal studio mic". That's a matter of preference. I enjoy this microphone. I may love it, you may not...it's all what you prefer...
Not to sound harsh, but the fact that there are other microphones out there for recording vocals, the evidence would allow you to deduce that the answer to your query is: No. If there was truly a "best" we'd all be using that, and the others would not exist.
Ok now the less synical version (I'm not really trying to be an @$$), if you can afford the Neumann and it's on your radar as one that would be cool to have, then get it. Seriously, it's a pretty safe bet that that mic will be a good purchase.
