Drum panning question.

Now that IS a unique setup! Its like he couldn't work out whether he was left or right handed :D

But still, his playing is tight and his drums sound great. Kudos to that dude.

He isn't in that band anymore thank God. It's just his youtube account and I thought he had a unique setup so I posted it.

I ALWAYS pan the drums as if I was "looking" at the kit. Hats are panned hard right, Floor tom panned hard left. Many recording/mixing engineers pan from the drummers perspective, many pan from the audience perspective, no RIGHT WRONG there, just a matter of taste

some barely pan either. a lot have the high hats, snare, kick up the middle, pan the OH, and pan the toms, and if they have them cymbals. I like to keep it simple by just using 4 mics and panning the OH and putting the kick and snare up the middle. I like that sound.

I think the best way to learn is to listen to stuff you really like and see if you can hear where different parts of the kit are coming from. If you like stuff with the high hats to the right, do that.
