before reverb there was always reverberant rooms and echo chambers. Maybe some impulse response type of reverb of an actual space would sound best?

Yeah, I like room modelers or IR verbs to just create a warm ambience for vocals. OTOH, a plate tends to sound more nostalgic to me (lots of plates used back then), even if a bit "colder" sounding. It depends as much on the rest of the production and the mood I'm looking for - and maybe even the mood I'm in ;) - as to which way I'd go.

In general, the more of a "reverb sound" I want, the more likely I probably am to go to a plate, whereas the more of a subliminal warmth I want to add to the vocals, the more likely I'll go with a room verb.
