Do Les Paul Studios suck? Pt. II

Wah-hoo. Got my wine red Studio today. Onlly $800, brand new. I compared it to a new Standard at the shop. It blew the standard away (because the Standard had old, dead strings and was set up poorly  ). Man it's fun playing strung low.

I'm most happy. Thanks to all for your comments in the previous thread.

Here's a pic:

Unfortuately, a Fender HM Strat that I got on eBay arrived on the same day. Unfortunate because I always like to get toys/axes at different times... It spreads out the fun/inspiration. Now the Strat is getting a bit neglected, but it is getting played.

I can't wait to gig with the Studio.

I guess this means you're gonna have to "Play until your fingers bled" in the words of the BOSS.

Congrats on your new toys.

Thanks 'Dick. ;)

My fingers did get quite raw last night.
Wasn't that also from a Bryan Adams song?

Thanks Hixmix.

Gigged with it this past weekend. Obviously not as bright as my Strat-style axes for clean stuff. Amp adjustments were required. Dirty tones were much warmer and fuller.

As a side note, the Les Paul Studio inspired me to re-learn a bunch-o-Zep songs. Fun stuff with the 'Paul down to my knees. :)

Speaking of Strats, here's a pic of the HM Strat that arrived the same day as the Les Paul Studio:

nice toys. awesome finish on the LP. The strat looks like a definite shredder. What kinda stuff does your band do?

no they don't, although the hawks will this year, damnit!!! dude, how big are you? that axe looked like a toy on you!

bigger

It's funny you should ask. That pic was about two months after finishing my College football career. I was an offensive lineman and, at the time of the photo, I was six four, 280lbs....

As a sidenote, I also noticed how ridiculous the les looks on me. When I gig now, my main guitars are my Taylor 815 jumbo and my Epi Casino mostly because they don't look so toyish. And if you think the les looks funny, you should see me on my Tex-mex strat. Absolutley silly...

Mostly guitar oriented popish rock. However, I get the shred out for a few solos.

The Strat is a shredder. Extremely flat neck. Sweeper's heaven.
Thanks for the comments.

A local shop in Kenosha, WI called Music Center quoted me a grand, but someone here referred me to Aplusguitars.com where they quoted me $850. I e-mailed Music Center with the quote and they beat it by $50. And yeah, it is a sweet axe.

That's pretty much the same axe way back in '94. It still looks god on ya regardless of your size (remind me to have you sit in for our gigs at biker bars. ;) )

by no means did I mean ridiculous. Les Paul's are huge on me and I can't gig with one for more than a few songs with out either switching axes or sitting down and trying to look all reflective and in the mood like. Much more ridiculous on me than you! i"m on 5'6" 115! Hell, I get carded at rated R movies!

At least now we know we can pick on you with impunity ;) But I'm staying away from miles.

What pickups does it have ?

490R Alnico magnet humbucker and 498T Alnico magnet humbucker

I wanted to drop an EMG-81 into it, but I'm having so much fun with these, I may hold off. Also, it's nice to not have to worry about unplugging it to save the battery.

I get suck a kick out of some of your posts.

If you want to keep the Les Paul sound you should never replace them with EMGs .... I would recommend LP 57s, the same that are on the LP Gary Moore and Custom 59 models... Killer sound.

Listen to DireStraits's "Brothers in Arms" and "On every Street" fro referece... best LP I've heard !

Oh yes I will! ;)

It depends on the sound you're going for. In fact almost the entire reason I got the LP was to drop EMGs into it. I'm not looking for a pickup for the LP, I was looking for a warmer guitar for the EMG.

However, like I mentioned, I'm grooving on the LP tone, especially through my SansAmp at a Marshall setting. So I may hold off on the EMG. Still, IMHO, the EMG-equipeed ESP sounds better through the TriAxis for high gain settings.

Damn, now I'm going to have to get a Marshall for the LP and another LP for the EMG... Anyone have any spare cash?... I'll get naked... Then you'll beg to pay me to put my clothes back on. :p
