using one for over a year...works as a portable stand-alone recorder...two phantom power channels, xlr or 1/4 jacks, onboard effects metronome, usb...hook two together and get 16 channel simultaneous recording...also comes with Cubase...400 bucks

You should post your location. I would have recommended this from a member here but shipping to UK would likely kill you.

Alternately, I would recommend a Tascam US 1800. Not sure what they go for where you live, but it has served me quite well. It actually has 10 preamps, so you could record 10 mics out of the box at $300US.

hey folks thanks for the suggestions.

the Tascam US-1800 looks along the right lines. the presonus audiobox 1818vsl looks awesome.

im in the UK and and it would have to be firewire or usb.

how about this the behringer FIREPOWER FCA1616

is this a piece of crap or not?

Well, only 4 mic preamps. You need to decide what you need first.
