    hard-drive for FD-8??

I'm trying to figure out what brand/type hard drive for an old Fostex FD-8 is best, since the one in it is extinct. Is it important that I get one with the same RPM rating? What else would be important? Any suggestions? Thanks

    Suggested distance from mic- vocals

Thanks All, Yes, pop-filter is in place. We were about 1-1/2 feet away. I think I need to squish it a bit more with the compressor. I use a DMP-3 preamp, and Blue Max compressor. Fear God and give him Glory (in a good way)

    Suggested distance from mic- vocals

I have a Rode NT1A, and an AT 4033. What would the optimal distance from the mic be, to do vocals. Vocalist style would be "average" to "soft." I would ASSUME the further away, the less need for compression. But obvioulsy, I want the best signal/noise ratio. Thoughts? Thanks.

    Fostex FD-8 skipping

One of my fd-8's is skipping too. I use it as a slave. I have 3 fd-8's. Two of them have internal drives, on uses a zip drive. My fear is that I'm about to "lose" the one that's skipping.

    FD4 to FD8

You can link them with a midi cable. Yes, you can record 4 tracks on one pass. I have 3 fd-8's linked together. They sound great. For the money, you cant beat these machines. Setting up the slave mode can be tricky, because the manual sux. I'd be glad to coach you through the process. Good luck.

    Fostex FD 8 Digital Multitracker

I got rid of my first FD-8 several years ago. After trying the Korg 16-track, I quickly realized that I didn't have the brains, or the patience for those type machines. I'd rather record music than spend my time jumping around from menu to menu. I since bought 2 FD-8's on e-bay, for under $300...

Ever a reason to use 3-pin out?

Mark, How embarrassing! You see, I don't have the DMP3 yet, it's in the mail. I just ASSUMED it had XLR outputs, like my TubeMP had. Thanks much! titan

Ever a reason to use 3-pin out?

Mark7, So, you're saying I need to "match" them, yes? When you say "at the other end", you mean at the board input? titan

Ever a reason to use 3-pin out?

I have the option of going to the back of the recorder, 3-pin, or 1/4 inch in front. I'm using the M-audio dpm3. titan

Ever a reason to use 3-pin out?

Since pre-amps provide a 1/4 inch, and a 3-pin connection out, is there ever a reason to use the 3-pin? I thought common knowledge says "use only the 1/4 inch out." titan

    Attack/Release on Bass compression

I read some archives, and got some good info. But, I'd like to try to get some specific thoughts. I'm short on gear, and I like to compress "to tape." I'm looking for a typical "warm, unobtrusive" bass tone. Specifically, how do some of you set your attack and release for this kind of bass? And...

Salesman said BlueMax Smart ain't bad

I ordered an M-Audio dmp-3 today. I would love to have an RNC too. I have the BlueMax Smart compressor. I asked the sales guy if he thought it would be worth going without food for two weeks, to get a RNC. I was "pleased" that he didn't immediately try to sell me on the RNC. He said he had one...

    What are the chances?

I use an AT 4033. I talked to a tech guy who assured me I fried the thing. Thanks. Titan

    What are the chances?

Since the only pre-amp I have is a TUBE MP, I've been laying some drum overdubs with it. After about 2 hours, the darn thing quit giving me a signal. I assume I've blown the tube. Question: would the drums cause this? Thanks, titan
