Multitrack Recording Set Up for under $400?

advice I would avoid those little all in one units...... when everything is in the same box, thats just more things that can (and will) go wrong. If you have a desktop computer already, but cant afford a laptop, just work on making your PC more mobile (streamline all the cables basically, so...

Who went to school for recording? Who hometaught themselves?

selftaught I got into a small local studio to do an unpaid internship, but the only useful bit of information I learned from those guys was "Yeah, we just taught our selves by buying new gear, learning it, recording someone on it, and reinvesting the new money into new gear". So I left...

How many drum mics do you record with

8ish Here's my most recent setup. Audix drum mic kit (D series, not F) D1 on snare (positioned to catch top, bottom, and hihats) D2 on toms 1 and 2 D4 on floor tom Audix ADX50 as 'overheads', but I space them "binaurally"... basically try to position them as if they were the drummer's ears...

    WTB your extra cables

... I know you've got them lying around not doing you any good. Before I spend way too much on assorted cables from a music store, let me know what you've got. Here's what I'm in need of: XLRs... mostly short ones (under 5') and longer ones (over 25') would be helpful. I also wouldn't mind...

    Studio expansion

kind of random question here, but i'm curious before I start shopping around. I'm recording 8 channels thru a firepod right now. 8 xlr's in, 1 firewire out to the PC. Suppose I wanted to expand my options before sending the signal to PC.... How would I use an outboard compressor or EQ on...

How to record drums to seperate tracks??

or a firepod. 8 mic inputs, great sound, very easy to set up. $400. You can go with a multi input sound card, but there are so many driver issues to consider, plus installing it...... It may as a general rule be a bit more expensive, but definitely take a look at standalone interfaces...

Drum Machine for Boss Loop Station RC-20XL

live drums? maybe not quite exactly what you were wondering, but here's what I've done with my RC 20 mic'ed up the kit minimally (kick, snare, OH) and routed thru a tiny mixer ($40). Output the mixer into the RC 20, and I can create loops played live on my drumset. When you start...

Best Kick Drum Mic Under 200$

Akg D110 I know everybody likes the D112, but if you are on an even tighter budget, check out the D110. I think I got mine for about $65..... and it sounds wonderful. Not perfect, it needs some EQ boosts here and there, but who cares. Obviously AKG know how to make a good kick mic...
