    Distorting Vocals

i have a little peavey rage 158 guitar practice amp, and i toyed around with some settings. you can get VERY close to the strokes sound with these settings: max volume, max pre, overdrive on, min low, max mid, max treble. then use the post as the actual volume knob. sounds pretty identical. the...

    homemade amp isolation box

i'm using an 80w peavey combo (bandit 112 - single 12"). i just wanna keep the drums from bleeding into the amp's mic and the amp from bleeding into the drum's mic.

    homemade amp isolation box

i'm looking to make a homemade amp isolation box to stop inter-instrumental bleeding. if i just made a wooden box with heavy foam insulation inside, would this keep the sound from escaping to at least some degree?

    Nady mics

i have some Nady SP5's (aka the bottom of the microphone barrel). they generally produce a scratchy sound with a trebly kind of sound coloring. but i lo-fi punk and rock kind of stuff, so they rock for me. i'm not too picky. i tried to record some acoustic stuff, and all the flaws are pretty...

cheap mixer w/ lots of XLR

i'm looking for a good, cheap mixer with a fair number of XLR inputs. i don't know why all these mixers have so many stereo inputs, but i never use them. i just want an affordable mixer with lots of XLR inputs. i was looking at a Peavey PV10 , but i wanted to see if anyone else had suggestions...

    sheet/rock records

i'm starting a new independent record label in northern VA. (i'm sure i'm only about the billionth person to post something like this...) we are starting to sign a few acoustic/rock bands, and we're looking for more. we operate The Vault studio (also in northern VA). check us out...

    center vs. doubling

is there any difference between keeping a track in the center and putting the track in twice: hard left and hard right?

    maya 44 usb bit rate

i'm looking to get a lower end USB interface box. i've been looking at several, and the MAYA 44 USB caught my eye...but i can't find the bit rate anywhere! is it 16 or 24? (also, does anyone have any strong feelings about the unit?)

    what are your software opinions?

i have acid pro 4.0. you can't record to multiple tracks simulateously, but you can do multiple tracks going into a mixer, then out to 1 track in the software. or, you could record each track separately. it's pretty simple, in my opinion, and works for simple multitrack recording. it costs about...

    lo-z to hi-z

hmmm the little imp worked fine. there is a slight hum, however. it is covered up when you record things, but if it's silent, you can hear the hum. in any event, it worked decently. thanks all.

    lo-z to hi-z

hahahaha, thanks. i have a pdf version of the manual, and i've read a lot of it. i guess i just didn't make the connection between trim and impedence. thanks for the help! i won't be able to set everything up until tomorrow night, but i'll try to post how it went sometime.

    lo-z to hi-z

i'm using a tascam 414mkii. each channel does have a Trim slider that goes from Mic (top) to Line (bottom). does this control the impedance??

    track bleeding

hmmm, i have it up just enough so that it is as loud as possible without clipping.

    track bleeding

yeah, that would be nice, but then i couldn't put any effects on different tracks and such...i guess as long as i had levels right on the mixer, i could just go straight through to the comp. i rarely add effects to guitar/bass/drums in post-production anyways, i suppose. thanks for the idea...

    Tascam Portastudio 424 + Computer

should sound fine, i think. i do 4 tracks on my 414mkii then transfer them to the comp and do all overdubs straight into the computer. if you EQ it right, it sounds pretty good.

    lo-z to hi-z

was that directed at Track or me? cause the description reads "In-line impedance-matching transformer for use in connecting low-impedance mics to high-impedance inputs." which is what i'm doing...lo-z mic to hi-z input.
