I have an fostex FD8 multitracker and I was wondering if anyone could comment on the preamp built in and if I should bypass it and purchase a separate pream altogether and, if so, which one is the the best bang for the buck (limited cash flow on this end).

Is there any advantage to using the inserts on the FD8 for a compressor/limitor or am I better of running my instruments and/or mics directly through the compressor/limitor and then into the FD8?
