    cassette deck as compressor/gain effect

yeah, not looking for that "tape sound" we're hitting 2 inch tape through a neve desk anyway. as a side note, we've been getting a pretty realistic tape warmth using an empirical labs fatso and had really great warm and fuzzy results really smashing the signal onto a half inch fostex 16 track...

    reinstalling/upgrading cubase - plugin problem

just reinstalled cubase and plugins (liquidmix for example) it seems that cubase is having difficulty understanding that the plugins on existing sessions with the plugins that are currently installed. upon opening a session cubase will say that it is missing (for example) the liquid mix plugin...

    MXL or Behringer Condenser???

i never thought i'd be saying this, but behringer make some pretty great mics and looking at the price, they are practically giving them away. we're actually in a studio at the moment, we've got a selection of neumann, EV, rode, shure, sv, mxl, studio projects and other random mics. the studio...

    mic modelling

Sorry if I was a little confusing. Yeah, basically I just want to know if anyone has come across a convolution-based mic modeller plugin. Since the Antares Mic Modeller was pretty much an eq and technology has moved on so much since then. Now we have amazing convolution dynamics, acoustic...

    mic modelling

There used to be an interesting plugin called Antares Microphone Modeller. I was wondering if anyone has come across any newer plugins based on convolution technology? Something along the lines of Speakerphone or Altiverb, but with mic convolutions. I'm not trying to turn an SM58 into a...

    best quality pitch shifting

melodyne is what we use for vocal pitch correction. what i'm looking for specifically is a pitch shifter. one that's better quality than the cubase 4 standard pitch shifter. thanks in advance.

    best quality pitch shifting

what is the best pitch shifter in your experience? for pitching monophonic and polyphonic material. for example if you wanted to pitch a bounced track down a couple of semitones, record backing vocals or chords, then pitch them up to fit the original tune. we're running cubase 4. otherwise...

    average mix time

depends on the project really. if it's something that's going to be released in several countries with quite a bit of fanfare i spend more time on it. i've spent a day on a mix, gone back to it for another day, given up and spent more time on it. other times if i'm producing rather than just...

    guitar to synth

on monophonic material, yes, you can extract the midi notes. but when melodyne's direct note access (tuning, stretching polyphonic material's individual notes) comes along, the possibilities are mindblowing. http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=jFCjv4_jqAY

    guitar to synth

that looks pretty cool actually. we've been doing a long winded melodyne trick to extract midi from audio. thanks. :)

    guitar to synth

does anyone know of any VST plugins that can convert notes played on guitar (or sung) into synth sounds? we're currently using the Korg MS20 successfully but would like to branch out to some different sounds. thanks in advance!

How would you record a drum kit with this gear?

i've engineered for a metal/emo producer and he replaces all snares and kicks as standard practice. personally i hate that sound but if you want a commercial metal sound it's worth thinking about.

How would you record a drum kit with this gear?

like i said, there are no rules are there? amy winehouse's album was recorded with one mic on the kit. the sound we are going for requires more and i believe rich costey likes more options when he mixes.

How would you record a drum kit with this gear?

depends what sound you want really. there are no actual rules. as well as this band i produce b sides and demos for people and i generally close mic everything and just use one room mic. i have to say that the drums on this album sound absolutely amazing and that's mostly down to great mics...
