    advice on recording guitar please

Another thing to consider is that, as a guitarist, I'm sure you've perfected your tone. You've accomplished this by listening to yourself through your amp. The only way to capture the tone you've spent countless hours on perfecting is by mic'ing the amp. Either that or spend countless hours...

Compression: during recording or during mixdown?

I bought a 3630 in March. I tried for a week straight to get anything out of it. I returned it and went for DBX. I'd advise you to do the same. It's $50 more for the DBX, but worth every penny doubled. I couldn't get any results from the 3630, let alone desirable ones. If I was limiting...

    Roll Off Frequencies

By "pre-mastering" I mean "mastering" the instrumental track before adding the vocals. I mixed down the instruments before recording the vocals, and then mix the vocals with that. Maybe this in general is a bad idea, but I've found it to work out nicely with my last few recordings...

What is everyones prefered method of recording?

What is your preferred method of having sex? Right now, I like to get with my girlfriend, we take off all of our clothes, and then get busy....How does everyone else do it? I don't mean to be a dick, but you're asking an incredibly vague question. It's very common to record tracks from the...

Improving Acoustics, do you think this idea will work?

Do you intend to try recording the vocals in that cubicle area? If so, what you're saying sounds like a pretty good idea....if you want your vocals to come through dead. The shower/bathroom suggestion is a good one for natural reverb, but if you intend to add reverb, you could find this a...

    Roll Off Frequencies

Thanks, but what I meant is that before I record vocals, I want to roll off the unwanted lows and (if necessary) highs. But thanks for the suggestion of how to handle the vocals. By the way...does anyone think "pre-mastering" before recording the vocals is a good or bad idea?

    Vocal tips?

I've also heard this makes your jizz taste better....therefore the ladies are a little less hesitant......maybe that's what your singer has in mind....

    *Help* questions conerning Logic

Also, I didn't bother looking closely into this, but when you mix down, I don't believe it mixes into a wave. Last time I tried, it mixed into some weird Logic file that could be listened to in logic, but I didn't find a method to burn it to a CD as audio....but like I said, I didn't give it...

    *Help* questions conerning Logic

Is it possible for you to mix on different software? I track through the same setup, but mix in Cool Edit. I've had the same problem with Logic RPC....I just gave up on trying to figure it out and fix it, and stick to recording on Logic and mixing elsewhere.....

    Vocal tips?

I'm not going to shoot down anybody's tricks and techniques, but I would like to offer a warning. Be careful with honey.....though it is soothing to the throat, it is very thick and heavy. It coats the throat which is not good....the tea may offset that, depending on how much honey you have in...

    Roll Off Frequencies

Thanks everybody. Sorry, but I've been unable to check the thread for a while. I'm at the stage right now in my band's demo that all of the instruments are recorded, and all that's left is vocals. I was wondering what input I would get from everybody if I left my question as I did. In...

I'm not certain of this, but I think Jayme is saying that the guitars sound fine alone, but the effects don't blend well together when mixing. Am I correct? If so, that's a problem I have too. Is there a trick to making 2 distortion settings that each sound good alone blend well together? Or...

    Roll Off Frequencies

I know it's been posted before, but I couldn't seem to find it in my searches.... I know it's often suggested to roll off below a certain frequency because anything at those low frequencies just sounds muddy....If I'm not mistaken, it's suggested to roll off below 50 Hz. Is this right??? Or...

Band needs to record demo, need help

I agree, Keith....but only to a point. He also said he wants to sell his demo to record companies. If he tries to record his own band, he could learn a lot and quite possibly have a shitload of fun....but he'll also find himself disappointed. I totally encourage him to try to record for...

Band needs to record demo, need help

If you want to send it to companies, it better sound good. If your demo sounds like a bunch of amateurs recording in a bedroom, you'll get the same respect. A good demo can only help you....a bad demo could KILL your chances. If you want to be taken seriously, have a demo that sounds like you...

    Close Miking Vocals

I love these threads that stray completely away from the topic at hand. They don't give any useful advice, but they're just so damn amusing.

Collaborating in Different Places on Different Recorders?

Obviously, depending on the scenario, there are 2 stand-out approaches: If you can send the files via internet, I would think that your best approach would be to use some sort of mixing software (ProTools, etc.). If you have wav files, you can edit/mix/etc. all on your software, and just add...

    Stereo vs Mono

I want to throw something else in on this topic....sometimes you want the extreme panning....especially on some heavily panned guitar effects....the guitarist likes that effect because of the extreme separation he hears right in front of the cab....even though it doesn't sound like that in the...

Making a singer's voice not die...

I just had a brief comment....I was taking vocal lessons for a while, and one of the first things I asked was how to prevent myself from losing my voice (I had done a lot of screaming with that band, with a lot of singing, too....so I needed my voice to sound good after screaming). I asked what...

    Record it hot???

I understand that cutting in the guitars will give range for the vocals and such, but I'm wondering if my goal should be for the final EQ of the whole mix to be pretty much even across the whole spectrum...
