You should also give the JCM900 VST a try:

There are a few other ampsim plugs in the suite, but the jcm900 is the best. It is no substitution for the original, but it may get you closer to the tone you want, with what you have to work with.
I never do. Well, almost never.
Why not just roll off when mixing. It gives you more options. The only reason I can see for using mic rolloff is if you are recording something that is clipping the preamp in the low freqs.
Thanks Tonio! My room is slightly less than ok, but I know certain positions where it sounds better. I plan on close micing for the most part.
The purpose of doing this project is twofold. One, I want to distribute this kit to other musicians who might not have access/skills/money for Brazilian...
on all instruments? I was thinking of a dynamic or two for the bass drum. The AT4040 is definitly the best of what I have for shaker and probably tambourine, because of its good high end response. I have yet to get a good recording of the cuica and berimbau with the mics I have. I'm sure it's...
I'm planning on making a Battery drum kit featuring samples of various Brazilian instruments that I own: Surdo (bass drum), Cuica (think straw and lid), Berimbau (like a bow with a metal string and a resonator), Pandeiro (tambourine), Caixa (tribal shaker), and an Egg Shaker.
I would like some...
Does anyone use this combo? I can't figure out how to record 24 bit audio. I can record 24 bit on other progs like n-track, but can't get it to work in Magix. I would just switch programs, but I can't afford Sonar right now and I don't like any of the other "cheaper" programs. Any ideas on the...
I'd consider looking at the Audio Technica 4040. I recently compared it alongside the KSM27 and there was no comparison in my mind. Compared to the AT4040, the KSM27 sounded shrill and was WAY colder (less hot, i.e. lower volume). They are about the same price, so it was an easy decision for me...
I love my Aardvark Q10! I also love my M-Audio DiO.
An important thing to remember is that your laptop needs an interface that is either firewire, PCMCIA, or USB. There seem to be mixed opinions on USB (mostly bad, 'too slow'). PCMCIA is good, but there are limited manufacturers (Echo comes to...
Hey,
More natural may or may not be what you are after. For example, at the bottom of this article:
http://www.clapton-online.com/clapton/mags/gp0601/ecgp0601.html
The sound engineer for Eric Clapton describes his setup for recording this guitar wizard. He uses expensive mics, of course, but...
This mic looks kinda interesting.
The frequency response chart looks pretty rugged, but it looks like it might "fill the niche" for certain occasions. Check it out>

I'd never heard of it until yesterday, so I know nothing of it. Does anyone else?
I did find some pictures on google that showed a young Joao Gilberto using a mic that looked like the RE-15. I also found an article from last year about a show he played at the Hollywood Bowl and he threatened to not continue because he was upset with the mic and wanted an AKG 414. Obviously...
Thanks for all the great info!
I'm definitly going to try the V69 as well as some of the "darker" mics listed by dot.
I hope to emulate a vocal sound like Joao Gilberto (guy who sings on "Girl from Ipanema"). Can anyone make a guess as to which microphone he may have used? "Girl from Ipanema"...
BTW, I've read the faqs, including Harvey's awesome post :)
I'm in the market to get a LD condenser mic. I would primarily be using it to record vocals for bossa nova music (soft and whispery vocals). It needs to be pretty hot to get clean tracks on quiet parts. Clarity and high freq...
Or as another example, the Aardvark Q10 incorporates the A/d d/A converter on the soundcard in a shielded case. It's not the best, but quieter and supposedly more efficient than an outboard incorporated converter. Although I'm sure the best would be a solution similiar to that mentioned above.
I'm in the market for an internal hard drive for music recording and I would like some suggestions. I'd like to stay around the $200 mark. Should I only be looking at 10K RPM models or is it not that big of a difference using 7200 RPM?
Thanks!
well...
I don't like it. It's too cheesy and 80's sounding for my tastes. The playing is good. Voice works good for this peice. As far as mixing goes, it sems like all the intruments are too distinct. Try to do something to bring the mix together. A little reverb over the whole thing might...
Yeah, I heard it too. I shifted the second drum track a little to get it out of phase. I think this does it :)
I brought the sax up a little also. It sounds much thicker and involved now. There might be a few problem spots still, but overall, I think this sounds good 8-)

Cool groove. The keys are pretty weak IMO. Timing issues. Bass could have more...bass. Like the ending, well not the very ending.
Good show all around, as far as mixing goes =D> .
ok...
First of all, I'm getting a lot of ear strain from the guitar parts. Maybe tone down the treble a little or add a bass boost/part to round out the sound. In my opinion, the background vocals could come up a bit. I could see this song having some kind of ambience going on, something slight...
