    Tascam 388 head cost

Thanks sweetbeats. I tried what you suggested and switched the cards. For some reason all channels work perfectly now. I'll test more but they seem stable. Maybe a card was a little off or something. Thanks for the tip! For the head I'm not sure I see a gap at the bottom but was wondering about...

    Tascam 388 head cost

Thanks sweetbeats. Here are some photos of the head in question. I haven't switched tape recently but have been going back to older reels. The "distortion" in track 2 is more like "muddy/mushy" dropouts. Totally unusable. They just started. I do see gaps forming on the head, or am misreading the...

    Tascam 388 head cost

Hi All, I have been thinking about replacing the recording/playback heads on my Tascam 388. Ive been getting drop outs on channel 1 and distortion on channel 2. I found a head that is "65% still good." The price is close to $300 with shipping. What do you think? Is that about the what head for...

Tascam 388 Reseating Channel Cards Query...

I did the same thing on my 388. Check these pics. I used some string to help evenly guide the strip out. It takes a little tug but try to be smooth and strong with it. The reseating them is easy. Just be slow, careful, and try not to snap anything. You should be fine.

    Traveling with Tascam 388

Hi Guys, I posted this in packing 101 but thought I might get a few more replies out here. I'm moving and bringing my Tascam 388 with me. We're going about 900 miles across the country with the 388 in the back of the moving van. I'll pack and handle it myself and was wondering if anyone had any...

    Fostex 250 4-track channel pops

Hi Guys, I got this old Fostex 250 from a friend because channel 2 pops. Everything else works fine and I'd love to fix it up. What I'm getting is what sounds like a dirty switch but with cleaning (and twisting) doesn't seem to go away. Also sometimes a few pretty loud "POPS" from out of the...

    POwer testing in old house

Hi there, I am thinking about renting a cheap little house in the country to do some album recording and was wondering about power issues. I’ll have a chance to go see it before I commit and was wondering if there is a way I could test the power to see if its “clean” for recording. I'm recording...

Tascam 388 calibrated to Quantegy 407 question

Hi All, My Tascam 388 is calibrated for Quantegy 407 tape. Would it need adjustment if I started using RMG RMGI EMTEC LPR-35? Would I need to tweak anything or should it all be fine? Thanks.

    Tascam 388 head going?

Yea. Everything seems to be working well now. While the 1+3 card was out we did notice this little burn area. Anything I should be worried about?

    Tascam 388 head going?

Success! I switched the rec/play amp card and all tracks are working perfectly again. Thanks VERY much j.harv and sweetbeats. You guys were spot on! I used some string to get into those little tabs, and with some slow but steady pulling and rocking back and forth the card came right out. We...

swapping rec/play amp card in Tascam 388

Hi there, I was wondering if anyone knows the steps to swapping rec/play amp card in Tascam 388? I have a problem with extreme volume dips on channels 1 and 3 on my machine and would like to see if the culprit is the rec/play amp card as suggested by some kind forum members. Also does anyone...

    Tascam 388 head going?

Hello All, I've been working with a nice Tascam 388 recording away until today I found that when I record something on track 1 and 3 there are BIG volume/clarity dips (all other tracks record fine-including track 2). I remember this happening before on track 1 sometimes but I use that for clicks...

Tascam 388: what to have repair place do?

Hi guys, Im settiing up a Tascam 388 in Europe so when I get there I can record. I had a friend get a machine and he seems to think it's in decent shape. Heads look good etc. He took it to a repair shop to get a little glitch on track 4 repaired but I was thinking while its in the shop to have...

    Traveling with tape

Hi Guys, I'm going to be taking a trip to Europe and want to bring some reels of tape for recording over there. Some are blank and some have some music on them. It is the Quantegy 407 on 7" reels. I've got about 6 reels. Do you know if they could potentially be damaged by the airport scanners...

    Different machines = different speeds?

Quick question. I'm working with a Tascam 388 right now in the states but planning a long trip to Europe and have a 388 on that side waiting for me to continue work there. Do you think the playback speed could be a bit different using my recorded tracks and switching to another machine? Dave...

    Tascam 388 out with EQ

Hi guys, I know this question has been beat to death but Im trying to figure out a way to go 8 channels out of my 388 separately WITH THE EQ (to Digi 002). I really like the 388 EQ sound and would hate to lose it but Im feeling the limits of 8 tracks. Is there a way? I should say that having...

Old Yamaha 100 mixer (left side not working)

HI Guys, I got this old Yamaha 100 mixer from a friend. It was used in an indie club in L.A. in the 90's and mixed bands like Nirvana, Beck, Sonic Youth, Elliot Smith, etc, when they came though this little club. I have it now and was thinking about fixing it up. The problem is when I plug my...
