This is the exact same problem I had with two units in a row. The problem didn't occur for two weeks with the first unit, but it was an immediate issue with the second .
I now have an RNP, and I went ahead and got the RNC at the same time, and I'm getting great sound. (To be honest though, I...
Not yet, it'll arrive Friday and I'll see what it can do over the weekend. (I'm sure y'all do NOT want to hear what my little Behringer mixer sounds like.)
I'm also pleased to say that I've since inspired my friend (the better musician of the pair of us), and he is now starting his research...
I bought an RNP and an RNC. I know that this leapfrogs my mics, but that's a good problem to have for now.
So my signal path will now be:
- An MXL2003 for each channel (each turned off axis for stereo)
- thru Blue Kiwi cables
- to the RNP with RNC loop
- out into Monster 1/4", then...
This is precisely a MXL2003 made for Mars Music, wired with Mogami cable, so you might look up the MXL2003 to get more information. I got mine at Mars for $150.
Very definitely this is my first "nice" pre, so I've got no ego at all invested in the cause of the problem. But if it were room noise, then one mic would hear that just as well as two, and this second box only hums when I use two mics.
Also, the first box was "right" for two weeks and I used...
All right, all right, I'll do it. :-) Youze guys are killing me.
Question though, if I get these am I on the right track?

Do "quad" cables have the same applications as regular mic cables, or are they made for something else entirely?
More specifically, what's the practical difference, in terms of home recording, between Mogami Neglex balanced (2549) and Mogami Neglex Quad (2534)?
I have two MXL 2003's and 3 POS cables. Problem is, I can't get any ONE mic/cable combo to make the hum, whereas absolutely ANY combo of two mics and cables causes it. Also, I don't get a hum when I run the same gear through my POS mixer.
I don't want to spend more money on cables until I'm...
Went in to GC for guitar strings on Memorial Day and came out with one of these for $119. (That price certainly solved the issue of waiting to spend a little more on the RNP.) Had a GREAT time with it for about two weeks, big improvement for me, read the thread on this price and really felt...
I've got a couple of MXL 2003 mics which I'm happy with for now. But looking forward, I'm beginning to learn about very relevant applications for omni and figure-eight mics, and I want to know the market by the time I'm ready to branch out.
Question is: In terms of the "cheapest of the fairly...
Of course it's opinion
I thought that for this thread a distinction was created between production and engineering, that is, between getting a good sound in terms of mix and feel and performance (which is timeless), vs the actual fidelity of that sound (which of course disqualifies any older...
