Any tips on keeping large numbers of vocal tracks singing chorus bits under control

I didn't see, did you post a link to the tune? My first thought is the performance - how tight did you sing all of those parts? If its a little on the loose side, what about getting in there with melodyne or some other time editing tool and tightening up some of the timing? I know that's...

    Holiday Track feedback

Hey all - I'm involved with a Christmas project called the jingle boys, we do a "record" every year, on the cheap, in our home studios, and give it away as a Christmas present to friends, families, coworkers, etc. we're all pretty decent musicians in our own right, but learning how to do this...

    My Grand Experiment (Strings)

Hey Everyone I'm a typical poor/ish musician who is jonesing for a string section sound on a shoestring budget. I find myself unable to get a convincing section sound out of my sample libraries (I'm currently using the kirk hunter orchestral samples.) I’ve also tried multitracking string...

Recommendations for DI guitar amp simulator/effects unit

Surprised no one has mentioned the fractal audio stuff yet. Playing guitar is my main gig, and the axe-fx is almost all I use anymore. It's pricey, $2k new, but I haven't looked back. I only have one tube amp left. IMO, it's that good. Plus recording over USB is about as convenient as you can yet.

    DI recording for guitar

Not to push it too much, but it's got a couple of good clean amps too - I do a lot of jazz work as well, usually my heritage 575 through either the deluxe of jc120 models. Track 3 on jingleboysmusic.com (Santa claus is coming to town) is the 575 through the jc120 model if you want to hear a more...

    DI recording for guitar

I record direct all the time now - I haven't miced up a cab in two years or something like that. I just bought myself an axe-fx and called it done. I get great guitar sounds direct - check out northern45.com or jingleboysmusic.com - 99.9% of the electric guitars on both of those projects were...

    Stepping up my preamp/converter

Hey everyone, looking to maybe move up a notch or two on my recording interface. I' currently using an apogee duet, which, sonically I'm pretty pleased with - clean, simple and sounds great. I've had some reliability problems, though. It's already been back to the factory once and its...

any good tutorial resources for mastering?

first, thanks AGAIN for yor patience and detailed responses! I sincerely appreciate it. and there's the rub, I suppose. Is this just a balancing act between eq and compression? Any tricks of the trade I can go research? And the corrollary - is there something I can do in the mix itself to...

any good tutorial resources for mastering?

I guess I sort of understand... 1 - practically speaking, as long as I'm far away from clipping my firepod and have a decently loud enough input, I'm probably fine? 2 - I guess I still don't completely see why signal level matters much, as long as it's clean...I usually normalize my mix before...

any good tutorial resources for mastering?

That was a good read, thanks! ok forgive my stupid questions again! i have just enough knowledge to be dangerous, and apparently just enough rope to hang myself with. :-) So in a typical 24 bit preamp/ADC, there are actually 24 usable bits? As in, the preamp/system is quiet enough not to...

any good tutorial resources for mastering?

Thanks guys. I was always under the impression that you wanted to record things louder to get a better signal to noise ratio. Can someone explain why I want to record at a lower level, and how that plays into getting a better master? And a stupid newbie technical question - how do I check the...

any good tutorial resources for mastering?

Quick question - anyone know of any good mastering tutorials on the web? Long backstory - Im VERY new at this, but I just "mixed" and "mastered" one of my bands songs, Forever, on my MacBook in logic. You can hear it at www.northern45.com. I feel like I can get a decent sounding mix, but when...

    Exporting from Protools LE

So my buddy has a bunch of sessions in protools LE that I would like to import into logic. I know that we need to make an OMF or AAF file. Not sure how to do that in PT, though. There is an "Export" option under the file menu but it was grayed out. Any thoughts? Can you even do this in LE...

    Monitor placement and mounting

Thanks guys. The monitors arrived yesterday; I'm going to try and set them up this weekend. They are KRK passive monitors that were relatively affordable from musicians friend, so I thought I'd give them a try. I'll probably have to build some shelves on the wall and mount them that way. I...
