I think they can be sync'd together via SCSI. One acts as the master and the other as the slave. It's a bit fiddly and involves alot of setting in and out points and clocks and all these things that ultimately are a pain in the patootie ! To be honest with you, I've never really thought about sync~ing them together until you mentioned it. On the DPS forum, it's come up a few times over the years but I've tended to look at those posts with one eye only and half a mind.
When I was on 4 track, I wasn't worried about going up to the extra faders of 8. On 8 I've not been worried about moving up to 12. I'm not fazed by 16 track but 24 would currently be a stretch for me !
But I never dismiss anything. This could be a seed that takes a while to germinate. For the moment though, I'm just glad I have the back up unit. But I'm already using it !

It's great that you go straight from the Deeps to CD-you do good mixes and it's a good indication of what can be done.
Taking part in the forums and taking in much the knowledge and experiences of the computing majority has made me far more disposed towards recording on a computer. But I don't want to do it. I bought a dedicated laptop a couple of years back and though it has Cubase 5 Essentials on it, I don't use it. I use the programme to house and run my VSTis. I don't really want to go through another new learning curve just yet.
While looking for a used CD recorder this week, I came across a used DPS 12i and as I've been looking for a second back up unit for a while, I snapped it up ! So my move to the computer world has been put off hopefully for a couple of decades !
The other good thing is that I can fly parts from one project to another now, which I couldn't do before, without using the portastudio.

How goes it ? I'm OK this end. Trying to get some tracking and submixing done. I decided to remix most of the stuff that I'd done on my 8 track cassette portastudio, partly because I kind of always felt they were a bit muddy and partly because I want to see if studio monitors really make that much of a difference. I've got about 30 or so tracks to remix as well as all the AKAI DPS12i stuff that I've been working on for the last couple of years. Sometimes, it gets a bit much and then I have to take a break for a week or so !
Which reminds me, I meant to ask you, when you've completed tracking and you're ready to mix, what do you mix to ? I remember you saying you don't use computers. I'm in the same boat both with the portastudio and the Akai. I mix straight to a CD recorder.
Well, take care mate, funny what you were saying about being out of milk, suddenly, my older son is well into it so we are out half the time !
