This is my first song post (be gentle)

I'm only 15 years old
I recorded all the instruments and mixed them myself
It was recorded on my PC studio



Please give your thoughts

Well now,.. this is pretty impressive....... for 15.. :p ;)

Quite frankly I have little, to no, respect for 3 Doors Down (as musicians)... all their stuff is basically the three easiest chords on planet earth... (Em, C, D).... but they sure can write a hook.. :p

but I digress... I think you did a pretty impressive job recreating this song... the only thing noticable that I would've changed is the vocal "sound". It was prolly the flattest part of the mix. The acoustic sound was ok, the elec sound was ok (and quite similar to the original) but the vocal sound was a tad "dry". It's 2 am so I can't really think of any suggestions on how you would go aboot fixing that... but I'm at least coherent enough to recognize the problem... :D

Well if you're only 15 you're gonna be someone to watch in years to come 'cause this is pretty nicely done. Being a geezer...I'm not hip to 3 doors down but this is well played and recorded whether it sounds like the original or not. I'm impressed.
 
I LOVE three doors down,

and you did a GREAT job.

I'll comment on the mix later since I am listening on phones I am unfamiliar with.

On these phones though, the guitar is the chorus sounds superb.


your voice sounds very grown up for a 15 year old.

Good job. When it makes the transition from the acoustic to crunch part, the acoustic has a different power level. Try some compression on the acoustic to level it and hopefully sit better in the mix.

Well, to be honest: I really dislike 3 Doors Down. Overrated and Boring songs, and then especially 'Loser'. Sorry Chap, I just hate the original.

When you cover you an chose 2 ways: You recreate the song, or you give your own interpretation, you clearly chose for the first one.

It really sounds OK, definetely when you think you're only 15. Some work on the drums though, the guitars and vocals blend fine.

You seem to have talent, why do you put it in recreating bad songs! Create your own songs, you can do it!

I am listening continously on my ns10ms now.

The chorus and the verses sound like they were recorded in two different studios.

The chorus has a rich sound. Sonically inviting and warm, and very big. In short, the chorus and the bridge section sound "studio"

The verses sound less studio. Still good , but a little smaller sounding and the vocals a little less smooth(maybe a dynamic mic?)

I love the job you did and I'll check out the other tunes.

what exactly did you do for the vocals? mics, effects, eq, reverb, etc.?
 
powderfinger, to be honest the only i did to the vocals was use one of the preset vocal compressers in cool edit pro, then i added some reverb. That's all

yes i did use a dynamic microphone. A crappy behringer XM8500 (don't laugh it's all i can afford).

After listening to it more and more I can see what you're saying about how it sounds different in the verses. Maybe it needs more reverb on the vocals or another guitar part to make it sound fuller.

Also the crunch guitar parts were recorded with a behringer v-amp. Don't laugh! I just recorded the same part twice with different amounts of distortion and reverb and then just panned them and put on some delay.

I am familiar with the original so I would have to say that you captured the spirit of the original pretty well.
I just found a couple of things a LITTLE distracting.
The vocal is great but could sit back in the mix just a tad and when the power guitars come in the sound level on them is not up to what the acoustic is. Would like to hear them a little louder. Other than that, it kicks!!
 
Jeez... I've heard a lot worse from people over twice as old as you. Great job, Tukkis.
You should try to write some originals. I know, it's a different ballgame but much more fun to do. And I wouldn't be surprised if you would come up with cool songs. You're certainly a talented musician.

the behringer v-amp sounds mighty powerful on this piece and it would be worth getting one just to get that sound you got.

The main reason the verses sound different from the chorus, i think, is the heavy use of limiting. The verse sounds louder than the chorus. It should be the other way round, so try to set the limitng to where the volume would peak on the chorus.

You play the guit pretty well (helluvalot better than me at 15 ;)) Your voice sounds much older than that; nice tone.

Only crit I'll offer (since the guys have pretty much covered it) would be to put some real feel into the singing and playing... it just sounds a bit "disjointed" and stiff and a bit mechanical, in comparison to the original. It does sound like you recorded the vox about 10 times, and got bored of them! :) Also... dunno how to say this... in the heavy parts, the guitar should just be "looser" somehow. Less mechanical. Throw yourself into the performance, is all I can offer (since beer is probably out of the question at your age :))

Really nice effort there Tukkis.
