17 minutes track time in hifi mode means that the 32Mb holds 17 minutes total time in hifi mode. That's 17 min. total time for 1 track. If you concieve of using 4-tracks per song, then each track may be up to 4.25 minutes long. If you use "virtual takes", then that uses up track time, too.

Hifi mode is based on a 32kHz sampling rate, which gives you an audio frequency response up to 16kHz, which is pretty decent but not stellar.

Long-play mode is a low-resolution mode that gives you twice the "track time". It's based on a 16kHz sampling rate, which gives you an audio frequency response up to 8kHz, which is voice-grade recording, at best.

If you're interested in audio quality, I personally own (and recommend) the MRS-4 and MRT-3.

All samples were recorded off the MRS-4 into an iMac and converted to MP3 format. For knocking out quick ideas, it's been worth it's weight in gold.
